Plasma metabolomic fingerprint of advanced cirrhosis stages among HIV/HCV‐coinfected and HCV‐monoinfected patients

Salgüero S, Rojo D, Berenguer J, et al. - As metabolic disorders are induced by hepatitis C virus (HCV), HIV, and cirrhosis, researchers here examined if and how plasma metabolites are correlated with Child‐Turcotte‐Pugh (CTP) score and hepatic decompensation in HIV/HCV‐coinfected and HCV‐monoinfected patients with advanced cirrhosis. Via performing statistical analysis in this observational study of 62 HIV/HCV‐coinfected and 28 HCV‐monoinfected patients, they identified association of plasma metabolites with HIV coinfection, high alcohol intake, CTP score and hepatic decompensation. Cases with more advanced cirrhosis stages exhibited a rise in fatty acids, bile acids, aromatic and sulfur amino acids, butyrate derivatives, oxidized phospholipids, energy‐related metabolites, and bacterial fermentation‐related metabolites; while there was a decrease in lysophosphatidylcholines and lysophosphatidylethanolamines, branched‐chain amino acids, and metabolites of tricarboxylic acid cycle, among others, in more advanced cirrhosis. Per findings, HIV/HCV‐coinfected and HCV‐monoinfected patients exhibit altered plasma metabolomic profile with advanced stages of cirrhosis.
