Onset time and duration of action of rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg in patients above 80 years of age: A comparison with young adults

Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Jun 28, 2020

Bjerring C, Vested M, Arleth T, et al. - Researchers undertook this prospective observational analysis to investigate the onset time as well as the duration of action for rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg among patients above 80 years vs young adults. This study involved 16 young (18–40 years) and 16 elderly (> 80 years) patients scheduled for total intravenous anaesthesia. Experts monitored neuromuscular block after rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg via acceleromyography using train‐of‐four (TOF) stimulation. Onset time (from delivery of rocuronium until TOF count = 0) was the primary outcome. According to the findings, significantly prolonged onset time and duration of action following rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg were observed in patients above 80 years vs patients aged 18 to 40 years.
