Cold vs hot adenoidectomy: A prospective, randomized controlled trial

International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Jun 19, 2020

Na'ara S, Sayegh W, Nassar N, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective, randomized, single-blinded study to compare outcomes of the hot method (suction diathermy) and cold method (mainly adenoid curettes) adenoidectomy one year following the surgery. The sample consisted of children [n = 58; mean age 5.9 years (range 1.2–15)] under age 16 years who had adenoidectomy during the years 2014–2017. Study participants were randomized to hot or cold adenoidectomy techniques. Clinical and demographic parameters between the patients in the hot method group (n = 30) and the cold method group (n = 28) were identical. The size of the adenoid and the estimated bleeding were similar among groups. Hot adenoidectomy is linked to a better result than cold technique, as Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire scores one year after surgery reflect.
