Comparative effectiveness of probiotic strains for the treatment of pediatric atopic dermatitis: A systematic review and network meta‐analysis

Pediatric Allergy and Immunology Jun 15, 2020

Tan‐Lim CSC, Esteban‐Ipac NAR, Mantaring JBV, et al. - By analyzing relevant randomized controlled trials, researchers compared different types of probiotic strains with respect to their effectiveness in treating pediatric atopic dermatitis. The included studies were identified via systematic and manual search performed from inception until January 31, 2020. Overall 22 studies with 28 different probiotic strains were analyzed. Regarding efficacy, the top three ranked probiotic strains are: Mix1 (Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis CECT 8145, Bifidobacterium longum CECT 7347, and Lactobacillus casei CECT 9104); Lactobacillus casei DN‐114001; and Mix6 (Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, and Lactobacillus salivarius ). High certainty evidence demonstrated atopic dermatitis symptoms reduction with Mix1 vs placebo. On the basis of moderate certainty evidence, Mix6 vs placebo likely decreases atopic dermatitis symptoms. Overall, findings revealed that certain probiotic preparations are beneficial for reducing allergic symptoms in pediatric atopic dermatitis.
