Annals of Internal Medicine | Feb 28, 2020
Dobler CC, Morrow AS, Beuschel B, et al. - A systematic review with meta-analysis were designed to investigate the comparative effectiveness and adverse events (AEs) of pharmacologic interventions for adults with exacerbation of COPD. English-language searches of several bibliographic sources from database inception to 2 January 2019. Researchers included 68 randomized controlled trials involving adults with exacerbation of COPD treated in out- or inpatient settings other than intensive care and compared pharmacologic therapies with placebo, “usual care,” or other pharmacologic interventions. Two investigators independently extracted data and ranked study quality and strength of evidence (SOE). In adults with mild to severe exacerbation of COPD, it was noted that antibiotics and systemic corticosteroids decrease treatment failure.
