Association between neurological disorders and death by suicide in Denmark

JAMA Feb 12, 2020

Erlangsen A,Stenager E, Conwell Y, et al. – Via performing a retrospective cohort study, researchers investigated the association between neurological disorders and a higher risk of death by suicide. They also assessed temporal associations. The study sample included over 7.3 million people in Denmark from 1980 through 2016. The researchers found a significantly higher rate of suicide among those with a diagnosed neurological disorder compared with all other individuals (44.0 per 100,000 person-years vs 20.1 per 100 000 person-years, adjusted incidence rate ratio, 1.8). In all, having a diagnosis of a neurological disorder was associated with a small but statically significant increased risk of suicide death.
