Long-term trends in stroke survivors discharged to care homes: The South London Stroke Register
Stroke Jan 16, 2020
Clery A, Bhalla A, Bisquera A, et al. - Via constructing multivariable logistic regression models, researchers sought to identify trends in discharge to care homes, to examine the features of stroke survivors over time (1995–2018), and to explore the connections between these characteristics and discharge to care homes poststroke. Of 4,172 survivors of the stroke, 484 have been discharged to care homes. This proportion fell from 24% in 1995 to 2000 to 5% in 2013 to 2018. Age, stroke subtype, stroke severity, failed swallow test at admission, 7-day poststroke Barthel Index < 15, and a longer hospital stay were the features most strongly related to discharge to care homes. Over > 20 years, the proportion of stroke survivors discharged to care homes has been reduced by 80%, influenced by changes in demographics, disability and stroke care in the underlying stroke population. The level of poststroke disability remains high in those moving to care homes, requiring continued attention and investment.
