Impact of the donor-recipient gender matching on the graft survival from live donors
BMC Nephrology Jan 13, 2020
Naderi G, et al. - Given the importance of many factors, such as recipient age, BMI, serum creatinine, and positive history of dialysis, in predicting graft survival in kidney transplant recipients, and usual ignorance of donors and recipients gender, which is a factor that influences the transplant results, researchers performed this retrospective cohort analysis of 1,113 kidney transplant recipients and considered many factors for graft survival and results such as donors and recipients gender and age besides regular recipient factors like creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate, BMI, and positive history of dialysis, to ultimately shed some light on this topic. Transplant based on donor-recipient gender was most successful in male donor to male recipient, and then male donor to female recipient. Based on the findings, gender matching was advised for kidney transplant. The success of male donor to female recipient kidney transplant may be reported only in some exceptional conditions, and female donors to male recipients were not recommended, particularly in aged patients with the history of dialysis.
