Low serum leptin levels are associated with malnutrition status according to malnutrition-inflammation score in patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis
Hemodialysis International Dec 14, 2019
Ko YT, et al. - Among 100 patients on hemodialysis (HD), researchers examined the link between serum leptin level and nutrition status assessed by the malnutrition-inflammation score (MIS). Nutritional status relied on MIS (malnutrition ≥ 7 points). The assessment of body composition, biochemistry data, and serum leptin level was performed. Malnutrition was detected in 33 (33.0%) people. The malnutrition group exhibited significantly lower serum leptin levels but higher C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. The factors that were independently related to MIS in the multivariable linear regression analysis were HD duration, serum leptin level, CRP level, and albumin level. The serum leptin level showed a discriminative power of 0.834 for the prediction of malnutrition. Findings revealed a link between low serum leptin level and malnutrition. The possible worth of serum leptin level was suggested as a marker for nutrition evaluation in patients receiving HD.
