Analysis of partial thromboplastin times in patients with pulmonary embolism during the first 48 hours of anticoagulation with unfractionated heparin

Academic Emergency Medicine Dec 12, 2019

Prucnal CK, et al. - Via performing a retrospective analysis of a pulmonary embolism (PE) response team (PERT) database, researchers investigated the proportion of patients with PE treated with unfractionated heparin (UFH) who attained therapeutic activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) values within 48 hours of treatment. They obtained data of a total of 505 patients with acute PE who received anticoagulation (AC) with UFH. The analysis revealed that during most of the first 48 hours, the majority of patients with acute PE were outside of the therapeutic range of AC when treated with guideline standard dosing of UFH. The therapeutic PTT level was not achieved within 24 hours of UFH initiation in over half of the patients, and all therapeutic aPTTs were not evident in any of the patients.
