Supplemental MRI screening for women with extremely dense breast tissue

New England Journal of Medicine Dec 07, 2019

Bakker MF, de Lange SV, Pijnappel RM,, et al. - In this multicenter, randomized, controlled trial in the Netherlands, 40,373 women aged 50-75 years with extremely dense breast tissue and normal results on screening mammography were allocated to a group invited to undergo supplemental MRI or to a group that received mammography screening to determine the use of supplemental MRI to enhance early identification and decrease interval breast cancers in such individuals. In women with extremely dense breast tissue and normal results on mammography, during a 2-year screening period, the use of supplemental MRI screening led to the diagnosis of significantly fewer interval cancers compared with mammography alone.
