Waist circumference change is associated with blood pressure change independent of BMI change

Obesity Nov 28, 2019

Wang Y, et al. - Researchers examined the correlation of an increase in abdominal adiposity vs overall adiposity with blood pressure (BP) change. They assessed 5,742 men and 5,972 women (18-66 years) with no history of antihypertension medication use from the China Health and Nutrition Survey. Annual changes in waist circumference (WC) and systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure were estimated from two to eight repeated measures across 1993-2015. Outcomes suggest that BP may elevate in correlation to WC gain; this was noted even in the absence of BMI gain. BP management that addresses only BMI gain could neglect individuals at risk of raised BP who have raised WC but not BMI.
