The biomarkers suPAR and blood eosinophils are associated with hospital readmissions and mortality in asthma: A retrospective cohort study

Respiratory Research Nov 21, 2019

Håkansson KEJ, Rasmussen LJH, Godtfredsen NS, et al. - Researchers used a cohort of 1,341 patients (median age 45.3) acutely admitted with asthma in order to determine if there exists a link between soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) and blood eosinophil counts at the time of admission for asthma and readmission and mortality. These patients were recruited from Hvidovre Hospital, Denmark (November 2013 to March 2017). Experts detected significantly higher suPAR levels and lower eosinophil counts at admission in patients who were either readmitted or died vs event-free patients. A significant link of eosinophil count > 300 cells/μL with lower odds of readmission and lower mortality was also identified. Findings revealed both 365-day all-cause readmission and mortality in relation to high suPAR levels combined with blood eosinophil count < 150 cells/μL at the time of hospital admission in patients acutely admitted with asthma.
