Anaemia among men in India: A nationally representative cross-sectional study

The Lancet Global Health Nov 15, 2019

Didzun O, De Neve JW, Awasthi A, et al. - Researchers performed this study to ascertain the national prevalence of anemia among men in India. They examined the variation in anemia prevalence among men from states and districts across India and by sociodemographic characteristics; and whether men exhibit the geographical and sociodemographic variation in the prevalence of anemia similar to that noted among women. From a nationally representative household survey carried out from January 2015 to December 2016, among men aged 15–54 years and women aged 15–49 years in all 29 states and seven Union Territories of India, they included data of 106,298 men and 633,305 women. The analysis revealed a substantial anemia prevalence among men in India (23·2%). Moderate or severe anemia was reported in 21·7% of men with anemia, which was substantially lower than the 53·2% among women with any anemia. Men from different states varied widely in anemia prevalence; it was more prevalent among those with lower household wealth and education, in rural areas, smokers, consumers of smokeless tobacco, with a BMI of less than 18·0 kg/m2, and living in districts with a lower primary school completion rate, level of urbanisation, and median household wealth. Men aged 20–34 years had anemia the least frequently. Although there was a high correlation of prevalence of anemia among men at the district level with that among women, notable differences in the pattern of state-level variation of anemia prevalence was observed between the genders. Men and women showed similar variation in the prevalence of anemia by individual-level sociodemographic characteristics and district-level indicators of economic development.
