Assessment of the effect of urethral plate width on outcome of hypospadias repair

Journal of Pediatric Urology Nov 05, 2019

Chukwubuike KE, et al. - In this prospective assessment of individuals operated for hypospadias, experts ascertained the cosmetic and functional outcomes of hypospadias repair relative to the width of the urethral plate. Overall, during the study period, 47 individuals had their hypospadias repaired. However, only 42 persons who had their distal hypospadias repaired using tubularized incised plate urethroplasty were assessed. A total of 20 individuals in group A and 22 in group B, with a mean urethral plate of 7.3 mm ± 0.50 SD were there. The mean urethral plate width (UPW) in group A and group B was 5.6 mm ± 1.22 SD and 8.8 mm ± 0.88 SD, respectively. Overall, mean HOPE score was 40.0 ± 6.83 SD. A mean HOPE score of 38.7 ± 7.49 SD and 41.2 ± 6.08 SD was seen in Group A and Group B people, respectively. Hence, these findings implicate that the cosmetic outcome of hypospadias repair may not be ascertained by UPW, yet the functional outcome may be prognosticated by the width of the urethral plate.
