Age at puberty and risk of testicular cancer: A meta-analysis

International Journal of Andrology Nov 01, 2019

Maule M, et al. - In this meta-analysis, researchers investigated how testicular cancer risk is influenced by age at puberty, this was done to enhance the homogeneity in the definition of the exposure amongst studies to achieve valid pooled estimates. On December 2011, search strategies were carried in PubMed. Consideration was given to all markers of puberty onset (age at voice change, age when commenced shaving and reported age at onset). Re-classification of age at puberty from all investigations into a common three-level variable was done: younger than peers, same age as peers, older than peers. They identified 391 references, of which 12 satisfied the inclusion criteria. Consistent evidence showing a link between later puberty and decreased risk of testicular cancer was found in this study. This indicates a possible contribution of post-natal factors to testicular cancer risk.
