Trends in disparities in preemptive kidney transplantation in the United States

Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology Oct 14, 2019

King KL, et al. - Given preemptive transplantation in the United States has been limited by long wait times for deceased donor kidneys and low rates of preemptive wait-listing, researchers determined the impact of the introduction of the new Kidney Allocation System (KAS) in 2014 on trends in preemptive deceased donor transplantation and investigated if key differences in preemptive transplantation have shifted. They used the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients and selected adult deceased donor kidney transplant recipients in the US from 2000 to 2018. After the introduction of KAS, a slight rise in the proportion of deceased donor kidney transplants performed preemptively was reported, however, the persistence of disparities in preemptive kidney transplantation was noted even following the implementation of 2014 KAS policy changes and exacerbation of these disparities was noted for racial minorities and Medicare patients.
