Risk factors for the recurrence of diabetic foot ulcers among diabetic patients: A meta-analysis

International Wound Journal Sep 11, 2019

Huang ZH, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers identified the risk factors for the recurrence of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) among diabetic patients. Included were nine retrospective cohort studies involving 1,426 patients, 542 in the DFU recurrence group and 884 in the non-recurring DFU group. Male gender, smoking, duration of diabetes, duration of past DFUs, plantar ulcers, peripheral artery disease, and diabetic peripheral neuropathy were included risk factors for the recurrence of DFUs. In age, body mass index, total cholesterol, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic retinopathy, or hypertension, no significant differences have been discovered. Healthcare staff should pay attention to the risk factors identified for DFU recurrence. Due to the limited quality and quantity of the included studies, to verify the conclusion, rigorous studies with adequate sample sizes are required.
