Financial implications of 12-month dispensing of oral contraceptive pills in the Veterans Affairs healthcare system

JAMA Internal Medicine Sep 07, 2019

Judge-Golden CP, et al. - Researchers examined how the Veterans Affairs healthcare system of implementing a 12-month dispensing option for oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) influence the finances and reproductive health. Using a cohort of 24,309 women, they developed an economic decision model from the Veterans Affairs health system payer perspective. The 12-month OCP dispensing option is expected to produce annual cost savings of $87.12 per woman compared with the cost of 3-month dispensing, or an estimated total savings of $2 117 800 annually, while reducing unintended pregnancies among women veterans. Findings thereby support the adoption of a 12-month OCP dispensing option as economically feasible for the Veterans Affairs health system with the provision of better support to women veterans’ reproductive goals and autonomy.
