Association between maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy and risk of preterm delivery: The Japan Environment and Children's Study
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Aug 16, 2019
Ikehara S, Kimura T, Kakigano A, et al. - Researchers investigated how maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy affect the risk of preterm delivery via performing a prospective cohort study of a total of 94,349 singleton pregnancies. Participants were administered questionnaires detailing alcohol consumption during the first trimester and during the second and third trimesters. The analysis revealed an increased risk of preterm delivery in correlation with alcohol consumption during the second and third trimesters, but not during the first trimester. A four-fold higher risk was observed in correlation with heavy alcohol consumption (≥ 300 g ethanol/week) during the second and third trimesters compared with non-drinkers.
