Prevalence of impaired fasting glucose, type 2 diabetes and associated risk factors in undiagnosed Chinese rural population: The Henan Rural Cohort Study

Abdulai T, Li Y, Zhang H, et al. - Data for 36,960 individuals from the Henan Rural Cohort baseline with undiagnosed diabetes were assessed by researchers in order to determine the burden and characterize the risk factors correlated with diabetes and impaired fasting glucose (IFG) in an undiagnosed rural population. Nearly 60.30% of the study individuals were females and the mean age of individuals was 55.32 ± 12.18 years; risk factors for diabetes and IFG were prevalent. The predominance of diabetes and IFG was 4.19% and 7.22%, respectively. Possessing metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia, centrally obese, being overweight/obese and a family history of diabetes were correlated with diabetes. These factors were also linked to IFG. Consumption of a high-salt diet and smoking were also linked to diabetes. Moderate physical activity, on the other hand, was inversely associated with diabetes. Therefore, with obesity and dyslipidemia being some of the most significant predictors, diabetes and IFG remains prevalent in the Chinese population. Overall, for the purpose of maintaining low blood glucose levels, partaking in regular physical activity and eating fruits and vegetables may be of benefit.
