Prognostic value of average real variability of systolic blood pressure in elderly treated hypertensive patients

Blood Pressure Monitoring Jul 19, 2019

Coccina F, et al. - In elderly treated hypertensive patients, researchers determined the prognostic significance of average real variability of 24-hour blood pressure. Among 757 participants, they assessed the occurrence of a combined end-point comprising stroke, coronary events, heart failure needing hospitalization and peripheral revascularization. The patients were grouped as having low (≤8.66 mmHg; n = 252), medium (8.67–10.05 mmHg; n = 252) or high (>10.05 mmHg; n = 253) average real variability, based on tertiles of average real variability of 24-hour systolic blood pressure. In the participants, higher cardiovascular risk was reported in relation to high average real variability of 24-hour systolic blood pressure. This was found independently of other risk markers, average 24-hour systolic blood pressure and circadian blood pressure shifts.
