The association of home and accurately measured office blood pressure with coronary artery calcification among general Japanese men

Journal of Hypertension Jul 03, 2019

Satoh A, et al. – Via performing a cross-sectional study that included 919 Japanese men representative of the general male population, researchers determined whether home blood pressure (HBP) is more strongly correlated with coronary artery calcification (CAC) in comparison to perfectly measured office blood pressure (OBP). Using an electrical device, OBP was measured twice consecutively by a practiced nurse following 5 minutes of complete rest alone in a sitting posture in a silent room. During 7 consecutive days, participants were requested to measure HBP with an electrical device once in the morning. With no statistical difference among the two, the mean systolic OBP value was 136.8 mmHg and HBP was 137.2 mmHg. Also, OBP and HBP were greatly related to one another. Four hundred and fifty-four (49.4%) individuals had CAC. Hence, among the randomly selected male general population aged 40–79 years, the power of association of perfectly measured OBP with CAC was comparable with that of HBP.
