Percent of time in range 70-139mg/dL is associated with reduced mortality among critically ill patients receiving intravenous insulin infusion

Lanspa MJ, et al. - Given a link between reduced time in targeted blood glucose range (TIR) and increased mortality risk in critically ill patients, researchers investigated if diabetic status and antecedent glycemic control could influence the link between TIR and mortality. Critically ill patients managed with the identical intravenous insulin protocol at multiple centers were retrospectively analyzed, excluding cases with diabetic ketoacidosis, cases with fewer than 10 blood glucose readings, and repeat admissions. They calculated the percent of TIR between 70-139 mg/dl. Those with TIR ≥ 80% had lower mortality than those with TIR < 80%. Findings revealed an independent link of TIR with death in these patients, especially those with good antecedent glucose control.
