Association between transcatheter aortic valve replacement for bicuspid vs tricuspid aortic stenosis and mortality or stroke
JAMA Jun 15, 2019
Makkar RR, et al. - Via performing a registry-based cohort study—which included 2,691 propensity-score matched pairs of 81,822 consecutive patients with aortic stenosis who underwent transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) for bicuspid vs tricuspid aortic stenosis—researchers compared the outcomes of TAVR with a balloon-expandable valve for bicuspid vs tricuspid aortic stenosis. In all, they found that the risk of procedural complications requiring open heart surgery was significantly higher in the bicuspid cohort vs tricuspid cohort. Furthermore, they did not observe any crucial difference in 30-day or 1-year mortality; however, an increase in 30-day risk for stroke was evident.
