High willingness to use novel HIV and bacterial sexually transmitted infection partner notification, testing, and treatment strategies among gay and bisexual men

Sexually Transmitted Infections Jun 16, 2019

John SA, et al. - Researchers examined gay and bisexual men (GBM) for their willingness to give HIV self-testing (HIVST) kits with patient-delivered partner therapy (PDPT) and engage in geosocial sexual networking (GSN) app-based partner notification. Among a nationwide sample of GBM who self-tested HIV negative (n=786), 90.1% showed a willingness to give PDPT+HIVST to recent sex partners after STI diagnosis, and 96.4% were reported willing to notify sex partners met online using an anonymous function within GSN apps. Irrespective of casual partner condomless anal sex engagement, they noted higher odds of reporting a willingness to give PDPT+HIVST among partnered GBM compared with single men who recently engaged in condomless anal sex with a casual partner. If an app shows anonymous notification, the likelihood of obtaining counseling and testing was reported by 92.5%, engagement in HIVST is expected for 92.8% if provided a free voucher, and treatment from a pharmacy is expected by 93.4% with prescription voucher. These findings suggest novel partner notification, testing, and treatment strategies as generally acceptable by GBM. This suggests the necessity for feasibility and cost-effectiveness evaluations.
