Associations between young adult marijuana outcomes and availability of medical marijuana dispensaries and storefront signage

Addiction Jun 15, 2019

Shih RA, et al. - Researchers examined how the density of medical marijuana dispensaries (MMDs) around young adults’ homes is associated with marijuana use outcomes. Performing an online survey of 1,887 participants aged 18-22 years, in 2016-17, they identified the presence of 10 or more MMDs within 4 miles of nearly 85% of respondents' homes. Findings revealed a positive association of living near more MMDs with more frequent use of marijuana within the past month and greater expectations of marijuana's positive benefits among young adults in Los Angeles County. Stronger associations were noted between MMDs with signage and the number of times used each day and positive expectancies.
