Tomographic and refractive characteristics of pediatric first-degree relatives of keratoconus patients

American Journal of Ophthalmology Jun 14, 2019

Awwad ST, et al. - In this cross-sectional study involving 183 subjects, researchers assessed the tomographic and refractive features of pediatric first-degree relatives of patients with keratoconus. They included and studied both eyes of all candidates aged between 6 and 18 years. Data reported that 37.5% of the keratoconus patients were unilateral as assessed by tomography alone. Findings revealed that there is a high prevalence of keratoconus in pediatric first-degree relatives of diagnosed keratoconus patients. Screening is warranted in this high-risk group.
