Impact of apical extent of root canal filling on vertical root fracture: A case–control study
International Endodontic Journal May 27, 2019
PradeepKumar AR, et al. - Via selecting 86 subjects (119 roots) diagnosed with vertical root fracture (VRF) in crowned root filled anterior and posterior teeth, researchers examined the impact of apical extent of root filling on VRF in a case-control study. Overfilled roots had 11.5 times higher odds for occurrence of VRF when compared to roots not overfilled. It was noted that most VRFs had a complete corono-apical longitudinal extension and were present bucco-lingually/palatally. Following lateral compaction, root canals filled to or beyond the radiographic apex had a greater association with VRF than canals filled short of the radiographic apex after matching for age, gender, tooth type, master apical file size and taper, canal filling technique and time period after root filling.
