Incident left ventricular hypertrophy in masked hypertension

Hypertension May 26, 2019

Cuspidi C, et al. - Whether masked hypertension (MH) can predict new-onset left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) was investigated among the participants from the PAMELA study (Pressioni Arteriose Monitorate e Loro Associazioni). At baseline and after a 10-year follow-up, clinical variables, an echocardiogram, as well as office and ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) were simultaneously measured in 803 participants who had no LVH at baseline (left ventricular mass index <115 g/m2 in men and <100 g/m2 in women). An increased risk of new-onset LVH was evident in relation to MH, identified by office and ABP values, in this study. In addition, the risk of incident LVH in the general population may be inaccurately estimated by office blood pressure.
