Predictors of locoregional control in stage I/II oral squamous cell carcinoma classified by AJCC 8th edition

European Journal of Surgical Oncology May 23, 2019

Subramaniam N, et al. - Researchers retrospectively analyzed 296 patients with pT1-2N0 oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) treated with surgery (wide local excision and selective neck dissection) for the determinants of locoregional control (LRC) in AJCC 8th edition classified stage I/II OSCC. Perineural invasion (PNI) and moderate/poor differentiation (MD/PD) influenced LRC in stage I. Depth of invasion and PNI influenced LRC in stage II. They noted worse LRC in correlation to combined MD/PD and PNI vs either factor alone. Precision in the staging of early OSCC could be improved and possible candidates for escalating treatment could be identified, all improving outcomes, by including these parameters.
