Serum long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, hair mercury and exercise-induced myocardial ischaemia in men

Tajik B, et al. - In this analysis of nearly 2,200 men aged 42–60 years from the Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study, researchers assessed the odds for myocardial ischemia during exercise in relation to serum long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and hair mercury. A history of coronary heart disease (CHD) was present in 342 men. According to the findings, lower occurrence of exercise-induced myocardial ischemia was observed only among men with CHD history in relation to higher circulating levels of the long-chain omega-3 PUFAs. The investigators also noted a direct association of hair mercury concentration with the occurrence of exercise-induced myocardial ischemia in the whole study population.
