Factors associated with postpartum use of long-acting reversible contraception

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Mar 22, 2019

Oduyebo T, et al. - Researchers investigated 2012-2015 data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, a population-based survey among women with recent live births, to determine the prevalence of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) use among postpartum women. Further, they analyzed those using any reversible contraception for factors associated with LARC use. Overall LARC use prevalence of 15.3% was noted. LARC use was reported in 22.5% among postpartum women using reversible contraception, which varied by site, ranging from 11.2% in New Jersey to 37.6% in Alaska. Among postpartum women using reversible contraception, Postpartum LARC use vs use of another reversible contraceptive method were correlated with factors such as: age ≤24 years and >35 years vs 25-34 years; public insurance and no insurance vs private insurance at delivery; having a recent unintended pregnancy or being ambivalent about the recent pregnancy vs recent pregnancy intended; having ≥1 previous live birth and having a postpartum check-up after recent live birth. To prevent unintended pregnancy and optimize birth spacing, they emphasize ensuring all postpartum women have access to the full range of contraceptive methods, including LARC.
