Association between plasma B-type natriuretic peptide and anaemia in heart failure with or without ischaemic heart disease: A retrospective study

BMJ Open Mar 08, 2019

Tominaga M, et al. - This is the first report on a theoretical path model designed to illuminate the adverse effects of anemia (a risk of worsening heart failure) on cardiac overload. In this retrospective study, researchers used an advanced statistical procedure to assess the direct impact of anemia on plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). The study consisted of 3,756 patients, 684 patients without ischemic heart disease (IHD) and 3,072 patients with IHD. A path model was built to observe the adverse effects of anemia on LVEF and plasma BNP simultaneously, allowing for renal function. As estimated by plasma BNP, investigators found that anemia has a considerable risk on worsening cardiac overload. Depending on underlying cardiac disorders (IHD or not), the anemic response of LVEF probably changed. However, the response of BNP has been robustly observed.
